The song is about the terror of being alone, dressed up as a revenge fantasy. SZA's narrator keeps insisting she is so mature — she has a therapist, she can name her feelings — and then, in the same breath, plots to murder her ex and his new girlfriend. The joke is not subtle, and it is not meant to be. The comedy lives in the gap between the soft, almost drowsy voice floating over a relaxed boom-bap groove and the lyrics describing a basement home invasion. Nothing in the arrangement raises its voice or hardens; the beat stays settled, the vocal stays gentle, and the fantasy escalates from I might to I just killed without the music ever flinching. That calm is what makes the song unsettling rather than cartoonish — the violence is domestic, casual, almost hummed.

What the recording leaves standing is not the murder but the line underneath it: rather be in jail than alone, which by the final chorus becomes rather be in hell than alone. The revenge plot is a container for grief so total it cannot imagine a world where the ex is simply gone and happy with someone else. The narrator's admission that she is still a fan and still love him is the real confession; the killing is the fantasy that would make the loss impossible, that would freeze the relationship in place by ending it absolutely. The song's genius is that it never asks you to take the threat literally — it asks you to recognize the feeling underneath: a love so possessive it would rather destroy everything than survive it.
