John Williams
The Imperial March
"The Imperial March" means by making command wordless. The cue does not explain authority; it makes authority happen to the listener's body. From 0:03, rhythm creates alignment, and the theme turns that alignment into an emblem. The meaning begins before plot, memory, or recognition can do the work: power is felt as order.
That is why the repetition matters. From 0:26 through the return around 1:41, the theme becomes less like a personal feeling and more like an institution returning to itself. The late runway from 2:33 to 2:51 sounds almost satisfied with its own machinery, and the final break after 2:54 leaves the silence after 2:59 charged by what has just passed through it.
