Cat Stevens
Father and Son
"Father and Son" is about the point where love and authority use the same voice. The father believes patience, settlement, and his own survival can protect the son. The son hears that protection as a command to disappear into someone else's timing.
The song does not make either side cheap. At 0:43, the father remembers being young, so his counsel is not empty control. But at 1:30, the son names the deeper wound: speech has always been turned into listening. By the returns at 2:33 and 3:21, the meaning is clear. The son is not leaving because home contains no love. He is leaving because love that cannot hear him has become another form of confinement.
