The first thing is a wait. No singing yet, long enough that you start wondering whether the piece has already begun.

The first sound is a held vocal texture — warm, close, sparse enough that every entrance feels exposed.

The early phrases keep stepping back. A tone appears, the air tightens, then the music withdraws into quiet. The ensemble is testing how little is needed to keep time alive.

The pattern starts to circle. What felt like separate openings now behaves like a returning object. The voices keep a warm harmonic center, and small shifts in attack and spacing become the motion. The pulse is steady but not square.

The center of the piece. The voices settle into a long sustained stretch where the smallest shift in harmonic color registers because there's so little competing for attention. The sound stays mostly warm and tonal, turning by degrees.

The texture thickens. The pulse is more insistent, but the motion still comes from repeating vocal weight, not from a groove. Phrase after phrase drops back, then returns.

The voices press into a settled rhythmic bed. The center is firm, and the small instabilities around the beat become more noticeable because of it. Two conditions at once: ritual steadiness underneath, living vocal friction on top.

The texture starts to thin. The repeating pattern lets go, rebuilds briefly, then lets go again.

The gaps are wider now. The returns feel more like withdrawals than breaths inside the phrase. The pattern breaks into partial reappearances — and you start listening for what's left when the repeating ground can no longer hold.
