Aretha Franklin
Respect
"Respect" is not asking for admiration in the abstract. It is asking for a minimum condition inside intimacy: return home, receive love, money, fidelity, and sweetness, but do not mistake any of that for permission to diminish the person giving it. The repeated answer of "little bit" is the sharp joke of the song. What is being requested sounds small only because the surrounding bargain has been made absurdly large.
The spelling section makes the meaning enforceable. "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" turns the hook into something countable, checked, and impossible to blur. By the closing warnings, the song has moved past charm into consequence. The groove stays joyful, which is why the demand lands harder: pleasure is not surrender. The record dances while refusing to negotiate the floor it stands on.
